2.8L HARTLEY V8 IN A CATERHAM SEVEN

Ben Corley | June 18, 2007

Previously in May Seven Builder reported on the 2.0L RST V8, a Yamaha EXUP based V8 used in Caterhams, but here’s a look at the Suzuki Hayabusa based Hartley V8, which has also been installed in a Caterham Seven. Read and enjoy!

In 2002, Hartley Enterprises decided to build a motorcycle based V8 engine and purchased a Suzuki Hayabusa because it had an end drive cam drive. Also, it was the largest displacement production sportbike engine and aftermarket performance parts were available.

The first prototype was completed in 2004, and compared to a 2.0L Ford Zetec, has a much lower center of gravity, albeit being much wider.

Hartley Enterprises decided to install the Hartley V8 in a Caterham Seven. The design, construction & Seven installation is covered in detail with lots of photographs at the Hartley Enterprises website.

The H1 V8 is a 2.8 liter 32-valve V8, weighing less than most 4-cylinder engines and is about the same size. Hartley Enterprises is targeting track cars and other lightweight race vehicles which have been thus far limited to 4-cylinder engines for size and weight reasons.
