NOVICE DENNY AIMS FOR THE TOP AT CROFT
Ben Corley | August 31, 2007
Racing newcomer Glen Denny leads the Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge racers to the Croft circuit in North Yorkshire next weekend (8/9 Sept) and - though he’s never even seen the circuit - he’s planning on springing a surprise.
“Pole and two race wins - that’s the only option for me,” said the Ipswich-based 27-year-old, who won his maiden Superlight Challenge race at Silverstone in mid-August. “I know I’ve never been there before, but then I hadn’t been to Silverstone before either.”
Denny, who took up circuit racing only this season after success in karts, will be at the wheel of the Colards Motorsport-prepared and Anglian Pumping-backed Superlight with which he has built a slender series lead over reigning champion Graham Fennymore.
Denny, Fennymore and third-placed Rachel Green arrive at Croft separated by just six points; the driver ahead after Croft will have a vital advantage in the closing rounds - two at Rockingham at the end of September and two at Brands Hatch in mid-October.
Fennymore has the greater number of race wins to his name. He won twice at Donington and did the double also at Brands in June, then claimed his fifth UK win at Silverstone. Having already clinched both the Eurocup Sprint and Endurance championship titles, 42-year-old Graham is now concentrating his efforts on retaining his UK crown with the Ambitions/Hyperion squad.
Green has been on superb form all season in her Fauldsport Superlight, and the 36-year-old former Caterham Graduate Champion came agonisingly close to claiming her first UK Superlight Challenge race win at Silverstone. The chances are that once she’s uncorked the champagne bottle for the first time a steady flow of bubbly will ensue.
There are plenty more potential race winners in the field - not least Hyperion men Nick Payne and Craig Welsher, the Silverstone Scholarship winner, and Will Mitcham, the 2005 champion, who won the season openers at Oulton Park for the Taylor’s Foundry team.
For once Richard Reed has not had to travel half the length of the country from his Berwick-upon-Tweed home; the reigning Scottish Sports and Saloon Car Champion ought to go well at Croft. As should Stockton-based Bill Addison, who has waited several seasons for the chance to race his Superlight at his home track.
Others to watch out for include Chris Bialan, who’s made an excellent graduation to Superlights from the junior Roadsport Challenge series, reigning R400 Champion Pat Gormley and multiple 750MC champion Peter Ratcliff.
Backers for Caterham Motorsport’s UK and European race series include Bilstein, Brian James Trailers, Cheesman Products, Circuit Driver, Cooper-Avon Tyres, Demon Tweeks, evo, HSBC Insurance Brokers, Mitchell Cotts, Motorsport News, Stack and Steel Fabrications.
