270BHP/TONNE FORD SIGMA POWERED SEVEN
Ben Corley | June 4, 2007
Caterham introduced it’s 150bhp Ford Sigma as a Rover K-Series replacement earlier this year.
While initially stating that their mid-range model would produce 140bhp, 15bhp up from the 125bhp entry-level Ford Sigma powerplant, Caterham’s engineers decided that the powerplant was such a good match to it’s new, stiffer chassis that they raised the output to 25bhp.
To reach this new 140bhp output, Caterham revised the intake, added butterfly throttles and recalibrated the engine mapping on the 1.6-litre Ford Sigma unit. All this for just £1,500 more than the entry-level Roadsport model.
The 140bhp mid-range Ford Sigma Seven benefits from the same perfect blend of meaty torque, lightweight, stiff construction and exceptionally smooth power delivery. Caterham completed over 10,000 road, and 1,200 track miles in the Ford Sigma engine validation process, possibly the most rigourous engine R&D programme in the Seven’s 50-year history.
Prices for the 150bhp Roadsport Seven start at £17,495.
