LOTUS SEVEN: RESTORATION, PREPARATION & MAINTENANCE BY TONY WEALE
Ben Corley | May 29, 2007
A unique concept brought to us by Colin Chapman, the Lotus Seven design is now 50 years old. Starkly functional, but with its own sense of style; you would either love it or hate it. Colin Chapman endeavoured to provide an affordable, high performance sports car which could be assembled, maintained and raced competitively by an enthusiastic amateur.
The overwhelming appeal of his radical approach to automotive engineering and design is reflected in the iconic status of this now 50 year old design that is still in production by Caterham Cars. (and being copied by about 30 companies all over the world, not to mention backyard sheds and garages!)
This 240-page Lotus Seven: Restoration, Preparation and Maintenance book by Tony Weale, is rare and out-of-print, detailing the history, build and maintenance of the Lotus and Caterham Seven. Loads of pictures and detailed exploded drawings of suspension (including De Dion) are shown. There are side view sketches showing the evolution of the Seven frame bracing, and lots of other insights into the construction and restoration of the Seven.
My only criticism would be that the book is in black & white, and that it’s out-of-print. However, it’s definitely still an extremely informative reference for anyone interested in Sevens, provided you can find one!
