For those wanting an expression of British sportscar exclusivity, Caterham Cars has joined forces with RS Performance to offer the ultimate in bespoke Seven coachbuilding.

Caterham has long been the epitome of personalised motoring with almost every version of the 12,000 Sevens on the road differing from one another. The joint venture takes that famous philosophy to an altogether new level.

RS Performance is an exclusive, niche engineering house. Born out of the passion and pedigree of its founder, Russell Savory, it will offer an ‘everything is possible’ service to Caterham customers wanting cars truly ‘built to order’.

Using the motorsport-honed Caterham chassis and benchmark technology as a cosmetic and engineering base, RS Performance, will “turn imagination into reality,” says Savory.

The heartbeat of every RS-monikered Seven will be the unique RST-V8 engine.

With more than 16 years of development behind it by Russell Savory, the 40-valve, 2.4 litre engine reliably delivers an incredible 400bhp in normally aspirated mode, or over 500bhp as a supercharged varient, whilst weighing only 90kg in full running gear.

The unbridled lightness of the RST-V8 matched to the already featherweight Seven chassis delivers a power-to-weight ratio of over 1000bhp per tonne – more than double of a Bugatti Veyron.

This unique partnership will be open to customers looking for the ultimate in exclusivity, and carry a price tag to reflect the tailoring, detail and hand-built craftsmanship that will go into every RS-badged Caterham.

Validation of the engineering house’s abilities comes in the form of the supercharged ‘Levante’. This is the first Seven to rollout of RS Performance’s Hertfordshire doors and which only seven more of this type will be available.

With a 12 week waiting time and costing over £115,000, this supercharged engineering masterpiece boasts a modern interpretation of the Seven’s classic looks with a sophisticated electronics package with traction and launch control to help get the phenomenal power to the floor. Weight reduction runs throughout the car, from the carbon fibre interior finished with Kevlar seats down to the hosing used on the cooling systems

The RS Performance badge will sit alongside the established, and soon to be expanded, Ford powered Caterham Seven range.

The days may be shorter, but the recent crisp mornings and blue skies have continued to drive demand for new and used examples of the evergreen Caterham Seven.

In keeping with Britain’s position as the European home of the open-top (we buy more than Italy, Spain and France together), sales of used Sevens are up nearly 25 percent on last year.

The introduction of the critically acclaimed new Ford Sigma engine range this year – entry level 125bhp, 150bhp and the track day R400 weapon – have merely boosted nostalgic interest in the outgoing K-Series powered models like the Superlight R300.

Stock is always moving, but a typical view of prices from both ends of the scale can see a really low mileage 1.4 105bhp Classic model for as little as £9,950 right the way up to a two-year old, range-topping CSR260 for £34,000.

“Interest in the new Ford Sigma engines and the R400 have certainly helped us freshen stock as owners buy new again,” says Andy Noble of Caterham Cars. “Customers have a greater choice at this time of year as new car orders for spring delivery start coming through the door.”

Caterham has sold over 12,000 examples of Colin Chapman’s legendary lightweight sportscar since 1973, when it officially took over manufacturing and distribution rights. Many are still around today with some owners well into their twentieth year of ownership.

The oldest model currently in stock at Caterham is a 1993 built Roadsport 1.4. With a price tag of £12,000, the 128bhp two-seater confirms the rock solid residuals of the Seven.

The Caterham Seven is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The 2006 Caterham Eurocup Champion, Ben de Zille Butler, is to team up with 2007 title winner Graham Fennymore up for an end-of-season tilt at top honours in Caterham’s premier championship.

The ‘Caterham Dream Team‘ of de Zille Butler and Fennymore will be getting together in a CSR 260 at Brands Hatch next week (19/20 Oct), venue not only for the deciding rounds of the evo Caterham Eurocup but also for the down-to-the-wire conclusions of the Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge, the Motorsport News Caterham Roadsport Challenge and the Circuit Driver Caterham Academy. Six new Caterham champions will be crowned by the end of the meeting.

Graham Fennymore edged to within a few points of claiming his second successive Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge championship title at the weekend (29/30 Sept) thanks to a brace of masterful race victories at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Fennymore led both races from lights to chequered flag to take to nine his tally of wins for the season. A handful of points from the two season-closing Brands Hatch races in three weeks will clinch the crown for the Ambitions Racing/Hyperion driver.

His Hyperion Motorsport team-mate Craig Welsher made it to the podium for the first time at Rockingham, finishing second in both races to make certain of the team championship prize for his squad.

Reigning champion Graham Fennymore has a chance to secure his second successive Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge title next weekend (29/30 Sept) at Rockingham. Fennymore, who has already clinched both the Superlight Sprint and Endurance championship crowns in the 2007 evo Caterham Eurocup, arrives at Rockingham with seven UK race wins under his belt from eight starts.

The Oxfordshire racer leads his closest title rival, Glen Denny, by 19.5 points with only October’s season-closing Brands Hatch double-header remaining on the calendar after the Rockingham races.
